<br />
Ever since Koenigsegg emerged as the chosen buyer for fellow Swedish automaker Saab, rumors of a number of eco-friendly automobiles from the two automakers have been making the rounds. In addition to a <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2009/06/17/report-koenigseggs-purchase-of-saab-may-bring-electric-quant-c/">production version of Koenigsegg's electric Quant concept</a> from this year's <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/category/geneva-motor-show/">Geneva Motor Show</a>, we've also heard that Saab is hard at work developing a <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2009/09/10/report-saab-developing-hybrid-powertrain-for-upcoming-9-5/">hybrid version of its latest 9-5 sedan</a>.<br />
<br />
In an interview with <em>Auto Motor &amp; Sport</em>, Christian Von Koenigsegg has revealed that both the automaker that bears his name and the recently-purchased Saab are both working on <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2009/03/18/cargines-promises-fuel-saving-by-insuflating-air-to-engine-valve/">pneumatic valve technology from Cargines</a> that could potentially offer a fuel savings of 20 to 30 percent. Further, Koenigsegg believes combining that system with a hydraulic hybrid powertrain could potentially result in a 90-percent reduction in total energy consumption and allow the automaker to build a performance-minded hybrid automobile.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;"><em><strong><small>2010 Saab 9-5 sedan - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em></div>
<br /> We've already heard about the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2009/08/29/frankfurt-preview-saab-9-5-wil-come-with-five-engine-options/">five engine options</a> slated for the Saab 9-5 upon its debut at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/frankfurt-auto-show/">Frankfurt Motor Show</a> next week. Apparently, there's plenty more on the horizon in the coming years, including Saab's first production hybrid powertrain. According to <em>Autocar</em>, the hybrid system will match diesel fuel economy numbers while providing lower emissions and competitive performance.<br /> <br /> It seems Saab will pair an electric motor with excellent torque characteristics right from idle with a highly-tuned 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 120 horsepower. That gasoline-fed powerplant should be able to manage good power at higher engine speeds, making for adequate overall acceleration across the rev range.<br /> <br /> If there's any truth to this rumor, Saab is planning to use a relatively small battery pack that's not expected to power the car for long periods of time. Pricing information isn't yet known, but the Swedish automaker is said to want to undercut upcoming hybrids from its German competition.<br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-9-5-sedan/low/">Saab 9-5 Sedan</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-9-5-sedan/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/green.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/1205331_thumbnail.jpg" alt="1205331" title="1205331" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-9-5-sedan/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/green.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/1205344_thumbnail.jpg" alt="1205344" title="1205344" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-9-5-sedan/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/green.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/1205339_thumbnail.jpg" alt="1205339" title="1205339" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-9-5-sedan/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/green.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/1205338_thumbnail.jpg" alt="1205338" title="1205338" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-9-5-sedan/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/green.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/1205334_thumbnail.jpg" alt="1205334" title="1205334" /></a></div><br /> [Source: <a href="http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle.ASpx?AR=242985">Autocar</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/09/10/report-saab-developing-hybrid-powertrain-for-upcoming-9-5/">REPORT: Saab developing hybrid powertrain for upcoming 9-5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Thu, 10 Sep 2009 16:03:00 EST. <div style="text-align: center;"><em><strong><small>New Saab 9-5 sedan - Click above for hi-res image gallery</small></strong></em></div>
<br />
The new Saab 9-5 sedan that's coming to the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/category/Frankfurt-Motor-Show/">Frankfurt Motor Show</a> in a few weeks features a lot of snazzy interior upgrades - heads-up display, adaptive cruise control and lighting and tri-zone air conditioning, to name just three - but will also be offered with a range of engine options to fit every type of Saab buyer. The powerplants include: 2.0-liter gasoline, 2.0-liter BioPower, 2.0-liter turbo diesel, 2.8-liter V6 turbo and a 1.6-liter gasoline turbo engine. The 2.0 diesel engine emits the least amount of CO2, as low as 139 grams per kilometer. That BioPower engine will be able to burn E85 and all five engines will be mated to a six-speed transmissions. Stylewise, the new 9-5 takes some cues from the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/gallery/saab-aero-x-concept/">Aero X concept</a>. The new 9-5 goes on sale next year.<br />

Sounds good, but what are the details? <br /><br />The company is called <a href="http://www.electroengine.se/">True Electric</a>, and they supposedly use a small and lightweight "new high performance technology" and a "unique battery management system" to convert the vehicles. OK, so that wasn't exactly detailed. We did find mention of Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries. The company's website is all in Swedish, and Google Translate isn't helping us find much more. Luckily, the <a href="http://www.isa.se/templates/News____64166.aspx">Invest In Sweden Agency</a> reprints an English press release that says that True Electric converted a Saab 9-3 to electric power and managed a 0-62 mph time of 6.5 seconds, a top speed of 180 km/h (112 mph) and a range of around 93 to 124 miles. <br />Now that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/16/officially-official-koenigsegg-reaches-agreement-to-buy-saab/">Koenigsegg's purchase of ailing fellow Swedish automaker Saab</a> is all but officially official, our attention naturally turns to the the current product lines and possible future vehicles from the two automakers. At least a few people are <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/16/koenigsegg-meet-saab-saab-meet-koenigsegg/">wondering out loud</a> if there's a possibility that Koenigsegg's involvement with Saab could bring the gorgeous <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/02/28/video-and-live-shots-saab-aero-x-concept/">Aero X concept car from 2006</a> to life, but we're a bit more interested in reports that Koenigsegg's Quant from this year's <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/category/geneva-motor-show/">Geneva Motor Show</a> may see production via the use of some of Saab's leftover production capabilities.<br /><br />Powered by an electric motor at each wheel for a total of 512 hp and 527 lb-ft of turqoe, the Koenigsegg Quant concept featured a new kind of battery that is supposedly capable of providing a range of over 300 miles after a short 15-20 minutes charge. Futher, a set of solar panels on the Quant's exterior can reportedly keep accessories running without draining the main battery. If there's any truth to the rumors, we could see the Quant hit production in low volumes within the next few years.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/nlv-quant-by-koenigsegg-1/low/">NLV Quant by Koenigsegg</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/nlv-quant-by-koenigsegg-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/koeniggsegg-14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/nlv-quant-by-koenigsegg-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/koeniggsegg-15_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/nlv-quant-by-koenigsegg-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/koeniggsegg-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/nlv-quant-by-koenigsegg-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/koeniggsegg-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/nlv-quant-by-koenigsegg-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/koeniggsegg-7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://blogs.edmunds.com/greencaradvisor/2009/06/report-512-hp-koenigsegg-quant-solar-electric-4-seater-to-enter-production.html">Green Car Advisor</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/06/17/report-koenigseggs-purchase-of-saab-may-bring-electric-quant-c/">REPORT: Koenigsegg's purchase of Saab may bring electric Quant concept to production</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Wed, 17 Jun 2009 10:00:00 EST. <br />Every automaker has specific styling cues that it uses to make its designs instantly recognizable. It would seem this is especially true of a car's front fascia, and it's <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2009/05/01/rendered-speculation-chevrolet-sky-volt/">often fun</a> to graft the grille and headlights from one automaker onto a vehicle design from another. For instance, take a look at the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/tag/chevy+volt">Chevy Volt</a> and <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/tag/opelampera">Opel Ampera</a>, two vehicles that share similar bodywork with the notable exception of the front clip.<br /><br />We already know that General Motors would like to expand its Voltec powertrain into other brands in its portfolio, notably <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/tag/cadillacconverj">Cadillac</a>. Moving the Voltec upmarket a few notches would allow GM to recuperate the development costs of the high-tech powertrain package much faster. Could that also include Saab? A Photoshop expert named <a href="http://www.theophiluschin.com/">Theophilus Chin</a> has created a few renderings of what a Saab Volt might look like, and we think it's pretty interesting.<br /><br />Although a Voltec-powered Saab would also help move the technology into a higher price bracket, it seems unlikely that the automaker would extend its flagship powertrain technology to a brand that it's actively shopping, but it's fun to speculate on these things anyway.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.theophiluschin.com/?p=1074">Theophilus Chin</a> via <a href="http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2009/05/saab-elektrisk-artist-take-on-swedish.html">Carscoop</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/05/18/rendered-speculation-what-if-saab-made-a-volt/">Rendered Speculation: What if Saab made a Volt?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Mon, 18 May 2009 19:03:00 EST. <br />At this point, it's not a certainty that Saab or even parent company General Motors will still be in the car business in the year 2012, but let's not let that tidbit get in the way of an interesting concept car. Authored by Mayeul Walser, a 4th year design student at Creapole-ESDI, the Saab Fashionista is a 2+2 sport coupe that's inspired by the designs of Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel.<br /><br />More importantly, this concept is based on the underpinnings of the Chevy Volt, which means there's a range-extended electric powertrain hiding under its shapely bodywork. Since it only exists on paper, Walser took some liberties by ditching the eco-friendly drivetrain's stock four cylinder engine and replacing it with a more powerful V6.<br /><br />In reality, a more powerful internal combustion engine wouldn't make the Fashionista any faster than the Volt since the electric motor is the only power source driving the front wheels. No matter, it's an interesting concept nonetheless. We especially like the 9-spoke blade-like carbon fiber rims.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-fashionista-concept/low/">Saab Fashionista concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-fashionista-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/saab-fashionista-7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-fashionista-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/saab-fashionista-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-fashionista-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/saab-fashionista-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-fashionista-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/saab-fashionista-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-fashionista-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/saab-fashionista-10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://maymdesign.carbonmade.com/projects/2140803#1">Mayeul Walser</a> via <a href="http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2009/04/saab-fashionista-concept-design.html">Carscoop</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/04/29/rendered-speculation-volt-based-saab-fashionista/">Rendered Speculation: Volt-based Saab Fashionista</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Wed, 29 Apr 2009 13:35:00 EST. Over in Europe, the Saab is available with a 1.9L turbodiesel four in two power flavors. The milder single turbo 150 hp variant is now rated at 44.4 mpg (U.S.) in the sedan or 42.8 mpg (U.S.) in the wagon. The CO2 emissions of the two body styles are now at 139 g/km and 144 g/km respectively. The average 7 percent gains in efficiency are due to revised gearing, taller (lower numerical) final drive ratio, revised engine calibrations and lower rolling resistance tires.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2008-saab-9-3-diesel/low/">2008 Saab 9-3 diesel</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2008-saab-9-3-diesel/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/08/saab_93_diesel7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2008-saab-9-3-diesel/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/08/saab_93_diesel2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2008-saab-9-3-diesel/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/08/saab_93_diesel1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2008-saab-9-3-diesel/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/08/saab_93_diesel5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2008-saab-9-3-diesel/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/08/saab_93_diesel3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Saab]<p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/02/24/saab-improves-efficiency-of-9-3-diesel-now-up-to-44-4-mpg-us/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Saab improves efficiency of 9-3 diesel, now up to 44.4 mpg (U.S.)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/02/24/saab-improves-efficiency-of-9-3-diesel-now-up-to-44-4-mpg-us/">Saab improves efficiency of 9-3 diesel, now up to 44.4 mpg (U.S.)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Tue, 24 Feb 2009 14:39:00 EST. The latest model to get the ethanol treatment is rumored to be the 9-3X wagon, which Saab will unveil at the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/category/Geneva-Motor-Show/">Geneva Motor Show</a> next month. Even though development of the 9-X BioHybrid Comcept <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2008/08/03/saab-puts-9-x-biohybrid-production-development-on-hold/">was put on hold last fall</a>, flex-fuel vehicles are not dead yet and we found news that the 9-3X wagon will be available with either a <span id="intelliTXT">turbo 1.9-liter diesel good for 180 hp or a turbo 2.0-liter E85-capable engine that can put out up to 210 hp. So says </span><a href="http://wot.motortrend.com/6446515/auto-shows/2010-saab-9-3x-revealed-wagon-to-bow-at-geneva-show/index.html">Motor Trend</a>, anyway. As a GM brand, it makes sense for Saab to add the ethanol feature, but the press release (which describes the U.S. version and is pasted after the jump) mentions no such thing. We'll have to wait until we're in Geneva ourselves to know for sure. <br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2009/02/11/ap6039280.html">AP</a>, <a href="http://wot.motortrend.com/6446515/auto-shows/2010-saab-9-3x-revealed-wagon-to-bow-at-geneva-show/index.html">Motor Trend</a> via <a href="http://domesticfuel.com/2009/02/11/2010-saab-9-3x-ffv-to-be-revealed/">Domestic Fuel</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/02/12/geneva-preview-ethanol-powered-saab-9-3x-on-the-way/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Geneva preview: ethanol-powered Saab 9-3x on the way?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/02/12/geneva-preview-ethanol-powered-saab-9-3x-on-the-way/">Geneva preview: ethanol-powered Saab 9-3x on the way?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 11:55:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>Click the Saab 9-4X for a high res gallery from its Detroit debut</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />It looks like the cash flow crunch down at the Ren Cen has claimed another product victim. This time it's the Saab 9-4X that looks like it will see a delay of up to a year before it's launched. The new Saab crossover debuted as a concept at this year's Detroit Auto Show and had been scheduled to launch in the fall of 2009. The Saab shares its platform with the Cadillac SRX that will debut at Detroit in January and go on into production in May. In concept form, the Saab used a direct injected and turbocharged 2.0L four cylinder that's optimized for operation on E85. The production version will likely use something similar. While the concept didn't use a hybrid drive system, and GM hasn't given any indication in that direction, the production version could potentially use the two-mode hybrid transaxle that will debut shortly in the similarly-sized Saturn Vue. The premium-priced Saab could prove to be a more viable platform for selling the pricey two-mode system. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/detroit-2008-saab-9-4x-biopower-live-reveal/low/">Detroit 2008: Saab 9-4X BioPower live reveal</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/detroit-2008-saab-9-4x-biopower-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/01/img_0997_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/detroit-2008-saab-9-4x-biopower-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/01/img_0998_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/detroit-2008-saab-9-4x-biopower-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/01/img_0999_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/detroit-2008-saab-9-4x-biopower-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/01/img_1001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/detroit-2008-saab-9-4x-biopower-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/01/img_1002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.leftlanenews.com/sources-saab-9-4x-delayed-as-much-as-a-year.html">Left Lane News</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/11/04/saab-9-4x-possibly-another-victim-of-gm-cash-crunch/">Saab 9-4X possibly another victim of GM cash crunch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Tue, 04 Nov 2008 16:24:00 EST. <br /> You can check out a video of the Saab 9-X Air in action along with some discussion with GM Europe Design VP Mark Adams after the jump. Like the 9-X BioHybrid we saw at Geneva last spring, the Air is based on GM's compact Delta platform and it uses a variant of the same 1.4L Family 0 four cylinder that is going into the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2008/09/15/paris-preview-2010-chevrolet-cruze-live-reveal/">Chevy Cruze</a> when it arrives stateside in 2010. As usual with Saabs recently, it is tuned to run on ethanol or gasoline. The Air also has the second-generation GM mild hybrid system using a lithium ion battery pack. In the video, Adams indicates that Saab will be making a number of product announcements during 2009 and the 9-X is likely to be one of them. <br /><br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-9-x-air-3/low/">Saab 9-X Air</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-9-x-air-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/09/1203500-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-9-x-air-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/09/1203501-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-9-x-air-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/09/1203502-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-9-x-air-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/09/1203503-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/saab-9-x-air-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/09/1203504-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> [Source: Saab]<p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/10/03/paris-2008-video-of-saab-9-x-air-and-designer-mark-adams/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Paris 2008: Video of Saab 9-X Air and designer Mark Adams</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/10/03/paris-2008-video-of-saab-9-x-air-and-designer-mark-adams/">Paris 2008: Video of Saab 9-X Air and designer Mark Adams</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Fri, 03 Oct 2008 08:06:00 EST. As much as this is the case when comparing cars and their various performance figures, it is also just as apparent when automakers go green with their marketing strategies. We've seen it <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/search/?q=Advertising+Standards+Authority&amp;invocationType=wl-autog&amp;searchsubmit=">many times before</a>, and we are sure to continue seeing it well into the future. This time, it is Saab's Australian arm that is being hit for its over-inflated eco. Apparently, a line of marketing that claimed "Every Saab is green, with carbon emissions neutral across the entire Saab range" was found to be a bit misleading. Apparently, missing in the fine print was a note that Saab's planting of 17 trees only really offset a car's first year of carbon emissions. By claiming something different, Saab was not being <a href="http://www.koalanet.com.au/australian-slang.html#F">fair dinkum</a>. To make up for this transgression, the Swedish automaker is now planting 12,500 trees to offset the carbon emissions of all the cars sold during this particular campaign.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/ArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=57063&amp;vf=12">Drive</a> via <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/19/saab-australia-busted-for-misleading-green-claims-ordered-to-pl/">Autoblog</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/09/20/saab-ordered-to-plant-forest-for-misleading-claims/">Saab ordered to plant forest for misleading claims</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Sat, 20 Sep 2008 10:54:00 EST. The 9X Air is an open-top variant of the 9X BioHybrid concept that debuted at Geneva last spring. The 9X Air adds a new retractable top design to the compact Saab concept. It retains much of the lower body look of the previous car as well as the BioPower 1.4L direct injected turbo four cylinder engine. We'll be getting more details on the 9X Air toward the end of this week.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/paris-08-preview-saab-9x-air-1/low/">Paris 08 Preview: Saab 9X Air</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/paris-08-preview-saab-9x-air-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/09/saab-9x-air-1280-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/paris-08-preview-saab-9x-air-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/09/saab-9x-air-1280-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/paris-08-preview-saab-9x-air-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/09/saab-9x-air-1280-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/paris-08-preview-saab-9x-air-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/09/saab-9x-air-1280-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: General Motors]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/09/16/paris-preview-saab-9x-air-concept/">Paris Preview: Saab 9X Air concept</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Tue, 16 Sep 2008 08:48:00 EST. The 9-5 is expected to break out the Geneva Motor Show in March. Saab's largest car will be built on the new Epsilon II architecture that debuted last month with the new Opel Insignia. The smallest engine in the new 9-5 is expected to be a turbocharged 1.6L probably with direct injection. Other engines will include the 2.8L version of GM's twin cam V6 along with a pair of diesels. A 2.0L four cylinder along with GM's new 2.9L V6 diesel should be available. The use of direct injection will allow Saab to use higher boost levels matching the power of the larger engines with less displacement. Flex-fuel BioPower engines will certainly be part of the equation as well. <br /><br />[Source: <a target="Bwindow" href="http://www.channel4.com/4car/news/news-story.jsp?news_id=17938&amp;intcmp=rss_4car_news">Channel 4</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/08/12/next-gen-saab-9-5-to-get-1-6l-base-engine/">Next-gen Saab 9-5 to get 1.6L base engine</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Tue, 12 Aug 2008 17:03:00 EST. The 9-4X is expected to debut in production form later in 2009 as the current Trailblazer based 9-7X fades into history. From what we've seen so far the 9-4X will go into production virtually unchanged from the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2008/01/09/detroit-2008-saab-9-4x-biopower-concept/">concept version that we saw in Detroit in January</a>. The 9-4X and the new Provoq based Cadillac SRX will ride on a common architecture. The Saab will likely be powered by a choice of turbocharged engines. The concept used a direct injected and turbocharged 2.0L four cylinder optimized for operation on ethanol and generating 245 hp. The turbocharged 2.8L V6 from the Turbo-X sedan may also make an appearance. From these spy photos the interior looks to be carried over virtually intact from the concept. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/detroit-2008-saab-9-4x-biopower-live-reveal/low/">Detroit 2008: Saab 9-4X BioPower live reveal</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/detroit-2008-saab-9-4x-biopower-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/01/img_0997_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/detroit-2008-saab-9-4x-biopower-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/01/img_0998_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/detroit-2008-saab-9-4x-biopower-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/01/img_0999_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/detroit-2008-saab-9-4x-biopower-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/01/img_1001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/detroit-2008-saab-9-4x-biopower-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/01/img_1002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/225885/saabs_green_new_suv_hits_road.html">AutoExpress</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/08/10/spy-shots-saab-9-4x-biopower-caught-testing/">Spy Shots: Saab 9-4X BioPower caught testing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Sun, 10 Aug 2008 13:13:00 EST. In its original form, the car was built on GM's Global Compact Car (Delta) architecture which also underpins the Chevrolet Cruze and the next generation Opel Astra. In recent months Saab has decided to downsize other models, notably the 9-3 from the current mid-size Epsilon platform to the smaller Delta. That means the 9-X (likely to be called 9-1) in production will also shrink further. Saab has reportedly halted development on the 9-1 while it determines whether it wants to compact in the premium small car segment against the likes of the MINI and Fiat 500. If it does, the 9-1 will probably change its drivetrain. The concept was shown with a 200 hp flex-fuel version of GM's new 1.4L direct injected turbo 4-cylinder paired up with the company's second generation mild hybrid system. A smaller car would likely use a significantly less powerful drivetrain. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/genyeva-08-sazab-9x-b-iohybrid-concept/low/">Geneva '08: Saab 9X BioHybrid Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/genyeva-08-sazab-9x-b-iohybrid-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/saab_9x_biohybrid_lrg_12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/genyeva-08-sazab-9x-b-iohybrid-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/saab_9x_biohybrid_lrg_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/genyeva-08-sazab-9x-b-iohybrid-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/saab_9x_biohybrid_lrg_06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/genyeva-08-sazab-9x-b-iohybrid-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/saab_9x_biohybrid_lrg_13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/genyeva-08-sazab-9x-b-iohybrid-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/saab_9x_biohybrid_lrg_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.leftlanenews.com/biohybrid-saab-9-x-concept-put-on-hold-likely-to-stray-further-from-concept.html">Left Lane News</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/08/03/saab-puts-9-x-biohybrid-production-development-on-hold/">Saab puts 9-X Biohybrid production development on hold</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Sun, 03 Aug 2008 15:04:00 EST. Sometimes, there are just 30 minutes between unveilings and all of the cool concept cars hit the media scene pretty much at once. The South East Automotive Media Organization has taken a leisurely look back at the concepts that were on display this past show season and decided that the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2008/03/02/geneva-08-preview-land-rover-lrx-goes-black-stays-green/">Land Rover LRX</a> (pictured) and the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2008/03/06/geneva-08-saab-9-x-biohybrid-wins-best-concept-at-show/">Saab 9-X BioHybrid</a> were two ABG faves that deserve to be named at the seventh annual North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards, announced last night. The LRX earned the Concept Truck of the Year prize and the Saab was crowned the 2008 Specialty Concept Vehicle of the Year. Other winners include the Hyundai Genesis Coupe Concept (2008 Production Preview Vehicle of the Year) and the Cadillac CTS Coupe Concept (2008 Concept Car of the Year).<br /><br />See more pictures of the winners after the jump.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/new-york-2008-land-rover-lrx-in-silver-and-black/low/">New York 2008: Land Rover LRX in silver and black</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/new-york-2008-land-rover-lrx-in-silver-and-black/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/p3190707_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/new-york-2008-land-rover-lrx-in-silver-and-black/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/p3190746_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/new-york-2008-land-rover-lrx-in-silver-and-black/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/p3190741_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/new-york-2008-land-rover-lrx-in-silver-and-black/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/p3190738_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/new-york-2008-land-rover-lrx-in-silver-and-black/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/p3190704_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: South East Automotive Media Organization]<br /><p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/06/25/land-rover-lrx-saab-9-x-biohybrid-named-concept-cars-of-the-yea/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Land Rover LRX, Saab 9-X BioHybrid named concept cars of the year</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/06/25/land-rover-lrx-saab-9-x-biohybrid-named-concept-cars-of-the-yea/">Land Rover LRX, Saab 9-X BioHybrid named concept cars of the year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Wed, 25 Jun 2008 16:27:00 EST. The performance Aero model of the Saab 9-3 is now available with a 177hp 1.9L diesel. The 295lb-ft of torque is apparently enough to motivate the 9-3 Aero TTiD at similar rates to the gas engined version. The gas-fueled model however cannot approach the 41.3mpg (U.S.) rating of the manual transmission model. Even the automatic version achieves 34.6mpg (U.S.). The diesel in the Saab has the two-stage turbocharger setup with a smaller turbo for quick low speed response and a second larger unit for maximum power. Here in the U.S., the Aero with the 2.8L turbo V6 is rated at a mere 16/24mpg by the EPA. Even accounting for differences in test procedures, the diesel is clearly far more efficient than the V6. Unfortunately, here in the States we <em>again</em> don't have this option.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/ArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=52969&amp;vf=26">Drive.com.au</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/05/29/saab-9-3-aero-now-available-with-diesel-in-australia/">Saab 9-3 Aero now available with diesel in Australia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Thu, 29 May 2008 14:26:00 EST. The current 9-3 is derived from GM's Epsilon platform and the new 9-3 was due to come off the Epsilon II that underpins the new Opel Insignia, but a change may be in the works. GM has reportedly canceled the Epsilon II-based 9-3 in favor of a model built off the Global Compact Car platform that will be the basis of the next Astra/Cobalt and, of course, the Volt. If the new plan, proceeds that would give Saab two cars off the new chassis with the smaller 9-1 being the other. New structural construction technology in the new architecture will apparently help maximize interior space in the smaller car.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle.aspx?AR=232630">Autocar</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/05/09/new-emissions-rules-may-force-next-gen-saab-9-3-to-grow-smaller/">New emissions rules may force next gen Saab 9-3 to grow smaller</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Fri, 09 May 2008 13:27:00 EST. Volvo <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2008/03/14/volvo-officially-announces-swedish-plug-in-hybrid-development-pr/">officially announced</a> the project in March 2008, and showed us <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-recharge-phev-project/">pictures of the ReCharge concept</a> on the road. Those were nice to see. The Invest In Sweden Agency will be updating visitors to the Advanced Automotive Battery and Ultracapacitor Conference and Symposia in Tampa, Florida (which starts May 12) on the status of plug-in and electric vehicles in Sweden. The focus will be on Swedish hybrid technology projects, including what's happening with the Swedish Hybrid Vehicle Centre (SHC). This is where the Volvo-Saab - along with the Vattenfall energy company, ETC Battery, FuelCells Sweden and some parts of the Swedish government - project is taking place. The SHC will be funded with $40 million over five years. More details after the break.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/volvo-recharge-phev-project/low/">Volvo ReCharge PHEV project</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/volvo-recharge-phev-project/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/14869_1_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/volvo-recharge-phev-project/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/14867_1_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/volvo-recharge-phev-project/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/14866_1_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/volvo-recharge-phev-project/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/14865_1_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/volvo-recharge-phev-project/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/03/14863_1_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/04/30/swedish-plug-in-hybrid-vehicle-update-coming-in-may/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Swedish plug-in hybrid vehicle update coming in May</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/04/30/swedish-plug-in-hybrid-vehicle-update-coming-in-may/">Swedish plug-in hybrid vehicle update coming in May</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com">Autoblog Green</a> on Wed, 30 Apr 2008 11:52:00 EST.
