This particular story has been a long-time-coming, so firstly... sorry about that. This particular Chevelle is a little different that most that you'd be likely to see driving down... say, Woodward Avenue. The difference is in the engine bay. Making a thousand horsepower from a Chevy V8 engine is not at all unheard of, but making that power using propane instead of gasoline? Different story. Using propane allows for slightly lower emissions, so, as Autoblog already said, this is one clean hot rod.

Volkswagen had a big presence at the 2007 SEMA show in Las Vegas last week. They brought their Dieselution interactive display out to Sin City and showed off their upcoming Jetta CleanTDI in sedan and SportWagen form. They also announced the 2008 Jetta TDI cup racing series and and their Touareg TDI off-road racing program. The video above has a variety of Volkswagen representatives, including PR manager Keith Price and race driver Ryan Arciero, talking up the various programs.

Volkswagen is featuring the new CleanTDI Jetta SportWagen at their booth in this year's SEMA show in Las Vegas. The SportWagen is powered by the new fifty state-legal 2.0L CleanTDI diesel that will be going on sale next March. The new engine has 140 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque which, in combination with the six-speed DSG gearbox, should provide plenty of performance and great fuel economy. The SEMA show car has had its ride height dropped so that the 19 inch rims really fill up the wheel wells. Extra stopping power comes courtesy of a Brembo brake kit.

GM opened the full-scale electric car dialog with the EV-1 (and its demise), Toyota opened the full-scale hybrid dialog with the Prius. Now that Green is Good as Gold, aftermarket folks are opening the mass market dialog when it comes to making the cars you want to buy right now a little less hard on the Earth. Next in the queue: EcoTrek with its biodiesel Cadillac Escalade EXT, simply referred to as BioCaddy.

Starting with a plain black EXT, EcoTrek swapped the 6.2-liter Vortec V8 for Chevy's PPE supercharged Duramax 6.6-liter diesel. Fitting it required cutting a scoop into the hood. The Hydramatic transmission came out, and in went an Allison. The suspension was removed and replaced with an Air Ride ARC4800L Big Red Max LevelPro System. And as an extra, the BioCaddy gets an ethanol injection system for a claimed "30% additional HP or fuel economy." About the only thing dirty on it is the 26" DUB Dirty Dog II rims clothed in Pirelli Scorpion rubber. EcoTrek even blacked out all the chrome -- something we consider a good thing. Having a "clean ride" is about to take on a new meaning.

Volkswagen has a long history of grassroots racing series in the US and elsewhere. For the past three decades those series mostly used various GTI models. For 2008, Volkswagen is replacing the current GTI cup with the new Jetta TDI Cup. As the name implies, the new series will use the new Jetta CleanTDI diesel sedan. For racing purposes, the 2.0L diesel will be rated at 170 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque pumping through the standard six-speed DSG gearbox. The suspension and brakes will be beefed up for track use and all the usual racing safety equipment will be included. The series will be organized by SCCA Pro Racing and up to thirty cars per race are expected.

For the latest addition to his mega-garage Jay Leno has collaborated with Pratt & Miller to create a Corvette with body-work inspired by the C6R racers and ethanol flowing through its veins. The C6RS is the latest addition to Leno's collection, which also includes a variety of alternative-fueled cars including vintage electric cars. The C6RS started life as a Z06 but much of the front and rear fiberglass body work has been replaced by carbon fiber parts that duplicate the appearance and function of the race car. The most important stuff is under the hood where the 505hp LS7 V-8 has been replaced by an entirely new powerplant.

Katech Engines, producers of racing engines, started with a custom aluminum block machined from a solid block of aluminum rather than cast as most engines are. The top end and lubrication system are stock, but a forged steel crank combines with a larger bore in the block to yield an 8.2L displacement, up from the stock 7.0L. A new engine management system yields a bottom line of 600 hp from biofuel. The interior has been spruced up with a variety of leather clad goodies from Genuine Corvette Accessories.

At the 2006 SEMA show in Las Vegas GM made a big splash with the turbine-powered EcoJet concept that they built for some guy named Leno. SEMA is coming up again next week and this time they are reiterating the ethanol message with two of the cars they are showing. First up they have another occupant for Jay Leno's massive garage in the form of an E85-powered Corvette Z06. No messing with flex-fuel for this 600hp beast, it's E85 all the way. Second, a Chevy hot-rod inspired by customs from the forties and fifties will have multiple fueling options with the ability to consume either E85, gasoline or blend of the two. At least neither one of these is ever likely to accumulate very many miles on the road. It will mostly be rolling off the trailer, onto the show stand, and then back again.

Johnathan Goodwin is the patron saint of green cars (although as of yet, this honor has gone unrecognized by the Vatican). Last April, John was the guy behind the Chevy Impala conversion that smoked a Lamborghini in a quarter mile on the Earth Day special of MTV's Pimp My Ride. Arnold Schwarzenegger was so impressed that when he did a guest appearance on the Earth Day Pimp My Ride special, he hired SAE Energy (where John is co-partner) to make his Jeep run on biodiesel. Recently, John made the cover of Fast Company magazine for an article describing a green gearhead's wet dream.

Fast Company visited John's garage and found a 2005 Hummer H3 on jacks. John is going to put a 60,000 PRM, 1985, turbine, jet engine in the Hummer. The turbine engine will run on biodiesel or waste vegetable oil with a hydrogen-injector. John plans to make a series hybrid with this turbine engine. A beauty like that going to waste as a range extender? No, it charges a set of super capacitors in a matter of seconds, giving the car 600 horse power.

That's not all. Jon says "it'll get 60 miles to the gallon. With 2,000 foot-pounds of torque. You'll be able to smoke the tires. And it's going to be superefficient. ... Think about it: a 5,000-pound vehicle that gets 60 miles to the gallon and does zero to 60 in five seconds!" John is not just making drool worthy cars for stars like Neil Young (John is converting a 1960 Lincoln Continental to biodiesel, electric hybrid for him.) John said he wants to make a 100-mile-per-gallon car one day and he is working on a $5,000 conversion kit that make diesels run 50 percent more efficiently and emit 80 percent less pollution. John estimates his bolt-on kit will pay for itself in a year for bigger SUVs and two years for a normal car. He is getting patents hoping to license them to the big carmakers but he thinks automakers can do a lot more right now.

What happens when you turn German tuners at Heico Sportiv loose on a Volvo S80? Apparently you get an E85-ready High Performance version tricked out aluminum-and-leather beast. The car will greet public this fall at the SEMA show in Las Vegas.

The S80 High Performance Concept got plenty of exterior and interior upgrades, but first let's talk about the 350 hp bioethanol engine under the hood. It's a turbocharged T6 engine that gets 350 ponies at 5500 rpm and generates 550 Nm of torque between 1500 and 4000 rpm. With those numbers, it'll go from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds, for now. I'm guessing this performance comes when using E85, not lower octane gasoline, but Volvo doesn't specify. Heico Sportiv president Holger Hedtke says that a higher horserpower number is likely by the time SEMA rolls around.

On the outside, this Volvo S80 got seven coats of paint to make it look like "real metal" (no green points for this). Other features include integrated spoiler flaps, three larger air ducts, integrated LED daytime running lights and an integrated Volvo-branded sport grille. Whether there's a consumer market for the alé, a 2-seat 3-wheeler built by Fuel Vapor Technologies, or not, the vehicle is an early contender for the Automotive X-prize. The X-Prize is a global competition designed to inspire automotive innovation, and a multi-million-dollar prize is up for grabs. While it weighs a scant 1,400 pounds and is aerodynamically fluid, the alé would still achieve only about 70 mpg in EPA tests with the stock Honda 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Right now, designers say it can get 92 mpg. The difference is the patent-pending fuel system that serves up a vapor in front of the stock throttle body. During light-duty cruising, the engine's regular fuel injectors are shut off and engine runs only on the vapors. The alé we found at the SEMA Show did not have the vapor system on the engine. It would normally go on the turbo pipe leading to the throttle body. Officials said they are still working out the patent details and didn't want to show off the product too early. According to lead engineer Brad Zimmerman, the vehicle can go from 0-60 in five seconds. He adds that the biggest problem facing the vehicle before public release is fixing the "drivability" problems as the computer switches between the standard and vapor fuel systems. Right now the alé could be certified as a car in Europe but would be a motorcycle in the U.S. Currently there are no plans to market a stand-alone vapor system that could be retrofit on other vehicles because the electronics are so complicated.

At last week's SEMA show, a show not known for its embrace of green car technologies, hybrids finally made an impact on the annual SEMA Vehicle Design Awards. The awards finally added a hybrid category, and the inaugural winner was the Chevrolet Silverado Classic Hybrid. True to SEMA's aftermarket audience, the Silverado wasn't chosen for its reduced emissions, but because it because the hybrid that is most friendly to accessories. For its part, Chevy said the award proved the Silverado, which won with almost 22 percent of the vote, was now the "benchmark" in this new design category.

The promotional brochure for Predator Motorsports has seven photos of Hummers, all them doing a smoky burnout. The Southern California tuner shop is known for hot-rodding the gas-guzzling beasts or outfitting them with trick suspensions, high-priced leather or high-tech electronics. Predator also appeals to the owner who may feel a little guilty about the Hummer's lack of environmental sensitivity. So for $39,000, a Hummer H2 owner can get a Duramax diesel/Allison transmission (see the blue Hummer) swap and increase fuel economy up to 22mpg. H1 owners can lose the ancient 6.5-liter diesel and get the Duramax as well, but the price starts at $50,000. And if you're really into alternative fuels, Predator offers biodiesel conversions, propane and even pure hydrogen. To demonstrate these options, Predator showed off a Hummer H2 H1 SUT (that's the silver Hummer) at the SEMA Show with all four fuel supplies in one vehicle. The key is reprogramming the computer to make the necessary adjustments in fuel delivery when switching between fuels. Another way the company improves fuel economy is by using a selectable transfer case. Hummers have a fulltime four-wheel-drive system. The Predator transfer case allows selection between 2WD and 4WD.

Erin Brockovich was passionate about confronting world pollution and a physics professor was confident in the technology, but I'm still skeptical about the real-world benefits of a magnetic treatment for fuel. Brockovich and Dr. Rongjia Tao of Temple University were featured speakers at a SEMA press conference for two products from Save The World Air. First is the MAGChargR, which is basically a magnet that is positioned after the carburetor or fuel injector. The magnetic field purportedly changes the molecular structure of the fuel, breaking up the fuel droplets to promote more efficient combustion; hence better fuel economy and less harmful emissions. The other is CAT-MATE, an enhanced catalytic converter that STWA says improves cold-start pollution-reduction efficiency.

The magenetic theory has been applied to other fuel-saving products. Many regulatory bodies and consumer groups, including the EPA, have found no significant improvements in automobiles. Literature from STWA emphasizes tests conducted by Chinese labs on carbureted two-stroke motorcycles. While the company says the technology is applicable to late-model vehicles, no evidence of tests on cars or trucks was presented at the press conference. Officials said they are in talks with the EPA to submit the products for testing. And the Rand Corporation says it is reviewing all compiled test data and will issue a report before year's end.

Company officials stressed that the technology is still emerging and additional products that address concerns from skeptics will be introduced. Retail price, depending on applications, would range from $30 up to $195, said one official. STWA also said the technology has been offered to major automakers but none has entered in negotiations.

Brockovich is a compelling speaker and there is no argument with her position on world pollution. I'm not a physics expert and can't debate the controlled laboratory experiments that Dr. Tao conducted. But there are many emerging technologies that show promise in the lab or on a virtual simulation program that have yet to relate in the real world. I'm not convinced any magnetic device will have "significant" effects on fuel economy or emissions on a late-model gas or diesel engine. I see much more potential in sophisticated fuel-spark mapping in the engine-management computer as a way to improve fuel economy. As for carbureted two-stroke motorcycle engines that have no pollution controls, I'm open to the possibility that the principles Dr. Tao advocates could make a noticeable improvement with the proper execution. I still need to see more test results on STWA products, hopefully from labs with which I'm familiar - such as Consumers Union - and which will completely disclose the test procedures to ensure consistency and repeatability.

For $35,000 you could own an electric Smart. Hybrid Technologies showed off one of its early models at the SEMA Show. I didn't ask if the sky graphics were included. Even in factory colors, I'm sure this little gem will draw attention on the street. Not much in the way of technical information was available, but I have been offered a drive and face time with company engineers soon. The Smart is the second electric conversion offered by Hybrid. The first is a PT Cruiser. The company has a NYC taxi project under way with the PT Cruier to demonstrate the economic benefits of an EV in Manhattan where the average distance on a taxi shift is just over 100 miles. The PT Cruiser has an advertised range of 120 miles. To keep the vehicle in service, the plan is to replace the battery pack with every shift change. As one battery pack works in the vehicle, the other is charged. Both vehicles use a lithium-ion battery pack that weighs just under 500 pounds. The 35-grand price tag includes the vehicle; it's not a retro-fit conversion. The Smart was displayed in the DuPont Registry booth alongside numerous high-dollar vehicles. A company spokesperson said the initial target audience will be "early adapters" of technology and those serious about the environment.

Ever mix peanut oil with nitrous oxide? That's what Lin and Steven Austin will try when they attempt to set a land-speed record with an '87 Chevy truck and a massive 2-stroke Detroit Diesel engine. The V6 engine must run on regular diesel fuel to reach 220-degree operating temperature before switching over to peanut oil. When needed, Lin can activate the nitrous oxide. The 552-cubic-inch diesel needs plenty of air to turn over 5,000 rpm, so a pair of 70psi turbo chargers and a Roots-style 8-71 supercharger force air into the cylinders. The engine also gets a spray of alcohol for cooling purposes. The truck weighs 10,000 pounds and is hardly suited aerodynamically for land-speed attempts. But the Austins, which run Orange County Rod and Custom in Placentia, California, feel the 3,000-horsepower engine can propel them to a record run of nearly 240 mph or more.
